Get Smart-Started

It’s easy to get started with an ignition interlock device from Smart Start of Oregon. Simply follow these steps:

• Call 1-800-880-3394 and be connected to the administration department at corporate headquarters. One of our helpful associates will explain how the ignition interlock device works, and discuss pricing and whether a deposit will be required. The associate will then schedule an appointment with the closest available Smart Start service center.
• You should plan to arrive for your appointment with your driver's license and court documents in hand. The installation will take anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours, depending on the type of vehicle you have and the amount of instruction you need. The installer will ensure that the unit is operating properly.
• While at your appointment, you’ll complete the Smart Start lease agreement. You’ll watch the training video while their unit is installed in your vehicle. You’ll pay for your first calibration, a warranty if you choose one, and an installation fee and deposit if applicable.
• You’ll undergo training to operate your new ignition interlock device and take and pass three breath tests before leaving the Smart Start of Oregon service center.
• Once the ignition interlock device is installed, you’ll need to perform a breath test in order to start your vehicle and take “rolling retests” once the vehicle is in motion.
• You’ll need to have your ignition interlock device calibrated on a monthly or bi-monthly basis on or before your appointment date. The data since your last calibration will be downloaded from the device into the Smart Start network. This history will also be forwarded to the necessary authorities who have ordered the unit installed.
• You’ll pay a monthly or bi-monthly fee at your calibration appointment. The only other fees you’ll be charged are for a warranty if you chose one, to correct a lockout code, or to remove the device and install it on a different vehicle.
• Once your ignition interlock requirement has ended, we’ll remove the device for a low fee.
